Arthur Middleton papers, 1837-1878.

Papers consist of business correspondence, slave records, estate papers, receipts, certificates, and other items. Correspondence mostly consists of business letters concerning real estate tranactions and other matters, but there are also a few family letters, including a letter (1871) from Arthur Middleton's aunt Anne Manigault Dehon concerning the death of his brother Walter Izard Middleton during a yellow fever epidemic in Charleston, S.C.A group of letters (1872-1874) concern an unsuccessful attempt to form a company in England to buy Carolina rice lands. A printed form letter (5 November 1872) from William C. Bee & Company, which is acting as agent and inspector for foreign buyers seeking to purchase rice lands, solicits interested sellers. Slave records include receipts (1857, 1863) for a slave named William and others, slave bills of sale (1854-1863), and mortgages (1855-1856) on "Rose, Sopha, and her three children Julia, Richard, and infant named William" and other slaves. Estate records (1863-1864) pertain to the estate of Arthur Middleton's aunt Alice Izard Heyward (Arthur Middleton executor) and include correspondence, receipts, and accounts. Certificates (1863-1864) concern eye injuries of Arthur Middleton which rendered him unfit to bear arms in the army of the Confederate States of America. Other items include insurance policies, a mortgage (1858) on Daisy Bank Plantation; bonds; and an "agreement for the sale and purchase of Cornhill Plantation" (1855, sold by Richard Roper to Arthur Middleton).

Charleston, S.C. merchant and plantation owner. He was the son of Nathaniel Russell Middleton (1810-1890) and Margaret Emma Izard (1811-1836). Arthur Middleton was the owner of Daisy Bank, a plantation on the Santee River (S.C.), and other properties. During the Civil War he served in the Santee Rifles and, after being invalided, served in the Quartermaster's Department of the C.S.A. Army.
